Learn about the main types of cybercrimes
To stay safe from any type of digital threat, you need to understand the threats you face. Below are the main types of cybercrime.
Phishing
Phishing is the most common cybercrime in USA and is characterized by fraudulent communication from criminals posing as trusted institutions such as banks, stores, public entities, and other organizations.
The attempted scam usually occurs via email and aims to capture the victim’s bank details and other information.
Therefore, when you receive any notice of a credit card being blocked, the need to update your registration, or the provision of passwords or tokens, for example, pay close attention to the sender of the email and, if you have any questions, always contact the institution in question through its official channels.
Criminals often use convincing email layouts, but grammatical errors and the email address can make it easier to distinguish a genuine message from a fraudulent one.
Malware
Malware is malicious software created specifically to cause disruption or financial loss to victims. This type of system can be found on a wide variety of devices and can even affect entire networks.
Additionally, there are several types of malicious software that fall under this definition, such as spyware, Trojan horses, ransomware, worms, and scareware.
To stay protected from any type of malware, avoid clicking on suspicious links or accepting downloads from unknown sources.
Spyware
Spyware is a malware-class spy software whose main objective is to spy on activities carried out on devices connected to the internet and, from there, capture data, information and access, mainly to the victim’s banking details.
It’s installed without the user’s knowledge, and spying can occur throughout the entire web browser or on specific websites. Therefore, be extra careful when downloading any files or opening links while browsing the internet.
Spam
Of these terms, Spam is probably the most famous, because of its prevalence throughout almost the entire internet, especially in the email inboxes of millions of people.
The main characteristics of Spam are the mass and high-frequency sending of advertising content without any user consent (which is a violation of the LGPD ) and the sensationalist tone of the content.
It’s most commonly found in emails, but can also be used via SMS, WhatsApp, social media, and other digital communication channels. Also, beware of phishing scams!
What until now did not seem like as big a threat as the last terms we presented, Spam communications can carry viruses, false information, misleading websites or dubious links.
To keep people safe online, all email providers have an automatic filter that directs seemingly criminal emails directly to a folder called Spam or Junk.
However, criminals are becoming increasingly adept at circumventing algorithms and security systems. Therefore, there’s no reason to prevent spam from reaching your primary inbox. So be careful when opening any email you didn’t request or don’t recognize.
